MISS AFRICA USA PAGEANT CONCLUDES 2012 SEMI FINALS IN A GRAND RED CARPET BALL IN MARYLAND DEC 1 2012

The Miss Africa USA Semi Finals 2012 Saturday Dec 1st 2012, a remarkable night in the 8year history of the Miss Africa USA Pageant.  45 young African Women from across The United States of America, with various educational backgrounds ranging from Medical Students, to International Relations, Political Sciences to Phamacists and Economists, graced the Hampton Conference Center to give it their best shot at qualifying for a spot in the Grand Finals of the Pageant in 2013. Of the 125 contestants who applied and auditioned for the Pageant this year, only 45 were selected for the Semi Finals. The Semi Finals which included a training workshop on activities such as public speaking, modeling, fashion and interviews took place during the day on Dec 1st while the girls were being judged at the same time.  They then had to make their debut at the Grand Red Carpet Ball later that same evenning. An event which attracted 300 Guests including some Very Important Personalities,  Elected Officials, African Diplomats, Business men and women and Community leaders.  Personalities from the Pageant world also showed up in their numbers to support the girls. The Event which was Chaired by Dr. Aretha Makia also had on the Guest of Honor List: Mrs Hope Sullivan Masters, CEO of The Leon H Sullivan Foundation and Honorary Chair of Miss Africa USA Pageant,  Her Excellency Dr. Josephine Ojiambo, Kenya’s Ambassador to The United Nations.   The Production was Directed by non other than Mr. Kyle Haggerty of Haggerty and Associates. He has been serving as The Miss Africa USA Pageant Production Director since 2006.  He did such a fantastic job in bringing the best out of the girls and giving each one an opportunity to put their best foot forward.  Kyle Haggerty who is also the Author of  a New Book in the Pageant Industry that everyone is talking about “Producing Winners”  is a great talent coach who has managed, trained and produced reputable title holders in some of America’s top National Pageants.  He enjoys working with the Miss Africa USA Pageant because of its diversity and international appeal.  He did a great job again this year in Directing the pageant and played a vital role in selecting the best Delegates to represent at the finals. The competition was tough for the girls who had to struggle for the sole place to represent their countries because some countries had multiple contestants.  Kenya for example had three very beautiful, educated and ambitious young ladies.  Each had something special and their causes were very strong indeed.  In the end, Dr. Marie Ojiambo, a full time student in New York City, Studying Industrial Pharmacy was honored with the crown to represent Kenya in the 2013 Grand Finals of Miss Africa USA.  She vows to raise awareness and leverage support for people suffering with Sickle Cell Disease, an illness that she has lived with all her life.     Pre-elimination had been done for countries like Uganda and Angola so the girls from these countries were happy to show off their skills and talents and accept their places in the Miss Africa USA Finals.   A country like Guinea has a confirmed place in the Pageant because Miss Africa USA Pageant has a contract with the Miss Guinea North America Pageant to sponsor their reigning Queen to enter the competition and represent Guinea.  It was an honor therefore to receive the reigning Miss Guinea North America, Miss Souadou Drame from Canada, Pictured above in the middle.  Miss Africa USA will continue its efforts to collaborate with other African Pageants to sponsor their winners to compete in the Miss Africa USA Pageant each year to give the girls more opportunities and more exposure. Cameroon was another country that had a very stiff competion.  Miss Larissa Ngangoum hailed as the favorite in this race and she will be representing Cameroon at the finals of Miss Africa USA Pageant, come June 2013.  Her runner up was Miss Cynthia Talla.  Pictured above are the Cameroonian Contestants, Miss Larissa Ngangoum, Miss Hurlere Ndjousi, Miss Cynthia Talla and Miss Liz Njie.   Other Countires with a tight race were Nigeria where 4 delegates competed for the spot and the Place went to Miss Kathy Onwu.  For Ethiopia  there were two contestants and the finals place went to Miss Maereg Terefe from Illinois. Finally Ghana also had quite a challenging race and Miss Alice Gyamfi took up that place for Ghana.  The Reigning Queen, Gigi Tchouaga poses with the Finalsits

EQUATORIAL GUINEA: MISS Africa USA and Delegates Attend the IXth Sullivan Summit

The Sullivan Summits are organized by The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation and held biennially in an African nation to highlight key issues and best practices, stimulate discussion, define opportunities, promote private enterprise and foster high-level strategic partnerships.  The Biennial Leon H. Sullivan Summit is the embodiment of Leon Howard Sullivan’s dream to re-connect the nations and people of Africa with a displaced Diaspora spread out across the world.  His concept was simple – knowledge of heritage and history is innately strengthening.  Without a sense of history and ancestry, Africa’s lost sons and daughters cannot truly be free to reach their highest potential.  This dream and the awe-inspiring reunion is realized every 2 years through the historic gatherings of the Sullivan Summit. President of Equatorial Guinea, His Excellency Obiang Nguema Mbassogo wraps up his welcome speech marking the opening of the 9th Leon H Sullivan Summit which took place August 2012 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Summit IX will continue past traditions and create an atmosphere of open dialogue about the state of human rights and the interconnected issues of modern Africa. The Summit, by creating unprecedented & open dialogue and building upon the Global Sullivan Principles, seeks to define the opportunities for both growth and continuous improvement in the quality of life for all Africans. While the economies of Africa grow and evolve, the corporations and government institutions involved must develop responsible strategies to involve the citizenry in its benefits, increase the quality of life and guarantee access to human rights that foster self-empowerment. We are noted for our nonpartisan posture as well as our unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, both in the US and across the world.  The Leon H. Sullivan Summit is the first internationally recognized Summit of world leaders, convened on African soil, by a non-governmental private foundation.  We are proud and honored to continue this great legacy and to retain that distinction 21 years after the first convening in 1991. The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation empowers underprivileged people worldwide by promoting the principles of self-help and social responsibility. These goals are the articulation of the vision of the Reverend Leon Howard Sullivan. In order to fulfill our mission and in order to take the vision of Leon H. Sullivan to a higher level of effectiveness and expansion, the Foundation will support and create programs where such principles and ideals are implemented to improve the lives of the vulnerable. Also, we endeavor to infuse a spirit of activism into economic development by promoting ethics and corporate social responsibility principles among businesses and governments alike. THE GOAL: To bring the corporate and government communities together for the economic benefit of all.  We endeavor to bring the corporate and governmental communities together for the economic benefit of all, and invite businesses and individuals to create partnerships with Africa with our ultimate goal being a peaceful, prosperous, and powerful Africa. And finally, through the Leon H. Sullivan Summits we will continue to work towards realizing Sullivan’s dream to create a bridge from Africa to the developed world over which investment, tourism, education, healthcare, and other vital needs can traverse freely to the immediate benefit of the Continent of Africa and the ultimate benefit of the entire world. THE CHARGE AND THE CALL TO ACTION: Celebrating the power of partnership, peace and prosperity for Africa. To achieve these goals, it will take a significant investment from those dedicated to the ideals for which we stand. We recognize and acknowledge that this chapter in the Sullivan Legacy illuminates a global challenge that will require a cadre of committed global citizens from the entire Diaspora to prevail. OUR STRATEGIC GOALS: To create opportunity through dialogue. To advocate for the poor and disadvantaged. To cultivate a new generation of compassionate humanitarians in all walks of life. OUR CALL TO ACTION: To insist upon a world that is just for all. To help each other rise above adversity and continue to evolve as a great humanitarian race. This is the call to action on behalf of our global society and this is the work embodied in the newly established Leon H. Sullivan Foundation. This is the Foundation named in honor of a humble yet powerful man whose life’s work changed the course of our society. This is the Foundation that celebrates a man who, quietly and with purpose, sought to use his life as a means to move people from hopelessness to hope, from despair to discovery, from poverty to the promise of prosperity and a life of purpose. The Foundation named in his honor continues his legacy of hope as we work towards his goal of a just and fair society for all. (Leon Sullivan Foundation website)
