African Couture and High Fashion continues to make it’s way on the global stage. Miss Africa USA Organization features African Fashion as one of the categories of the competition and embraces designs by various Designers in the US and in Africa. The audience are blown away by the beautifully styled delegates on stage for the African Fashion show.
Snit Tewoldemedhin made history as the first from her country Eritrea to be crowned Miss Africa USA. The pageant which was founded in 2005 in Atlanta but currently head quartered in Prince Georges County Maryland has had a pause for over 3 years due to the Pandemic. The 2023 Pageant dubbed by the Founder LadyKate as “The Return” took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Greenbelt, MD on March 18 2023. A fierce competition with very 14 intelligent, savvy and phenomenal young Leaders on stage, pledging to take the lead to champion various causes, Snit Tewoldemedhin emerged as the Queen and was crowned by her predecessor Sherylene Grice, Miss Africa USA 2019- 2023. Congratulations Queen Snit and to all the amazing, dynamic future women leaders who graced the Miss Africa stage this year, establishing a bond of sisterhood and a network to thrive and grow. Thanks to the Community who showed up in their hundreds to witness this event which today is known as the ‘Mother of African Pageants’ in the diaspora. Introducing Dr. Kimberly Brown, director of The Blackberry Preserve, a historical consulting agency that keeps our stories fresh! The Blackberry Preserve is partnering with the Miss Africa USA pageant to celebrate diversity in beauty and the contributions of African Descent women all over the world. Dr. Brown is a former Miss Black Alabama and current orientation advisor to the Miss Black USA organization, where her work as a historian and beauty culture critic intersect to illuminate the often overlooked record of Black women as agents in defining beauty for themselves, rather than simply absorbing the norms of the dominant culture. She has worked as a specialist in women’s history at the Smithsonian Institution-National Museum of American History, the National Park Service, and Howard University. Now, we are excited to have her help us share with the world Africa’s modern richness in fashion, culture, and glamour! Simply put, the Blackberry Preserve makes history sexy!
